Paul Merson thinks Carlo Ancelotti would be the best managerial appointment for Chelsea, suggesting he would be a better fit than Mauricio Pochettino.

The Blues are still in the process of trying to find their next permanent manager.

Mauricio Pochettino, 51, is the individual now strong linked with taking charge at Stamford Bridge.

The Times claims that Chelsea are in discussions this week with Pochettino and he looks set to become the new manager, albeit there’s still not a consensus from the club’s recruitment team.

However, Merson does have his reservations about the Argentine coach.

Merson raises the issues around Pochettino not working since he left Paris Saint-Germain last summer. Also, he spoke about his time in the French capital.

He thinks that 63-year-old Carlo Ancelotti would be the ideal candidate to take charge at the Bridge. However, Real Madrid boss Ancelotti recently ruled out a return to Chelsea for a second stint as manager.

Writing in his column for Sportskeeda, Merson said: “I think Carlo Ancelotti is the perfect candidate to take over at Chelsea. He’s been there before and they need someone of that stature, but I’m not sure he’ll come back. Pochettino is another candidate, but Chelsea will have to be careful. He could get it done with young players at Tottenham, but failed to win the league at PSG – how many managers have done that? He’s been out of work for a long time.”

It sounds in the papers like Pochettino is on his way to Chelsea, but there’s still time for a crazy change of direction. Let’s be careful when trying to second-guess our chaotic club.

If Chelsea do appoint Pochettino, fans will need to quickly push aside his five-year spell as Tottenham boss.

He may not have been the first choice for every supporter, but any new man at Stamford Bridge should be given love and time. Let’s see if that’s the case!
