David Datro Fofana failed to impress in training at Chelsea – but he is now making waves on loan at Union Berlin.

The Blues handed the Ivory Coast international to the Bundesliga side on a season-long loan back in July.

So, what happened with David Datro Fofana at Chelsea, and how is he doing now? Let’s take a look…

What’s the story?

Well – according to respected journalist Simon Phillips – the Ivorian did not impress Frank Lampard and other coaches at Chelsea with his level of performance in training last season.

Interestingly – writing on his Substack – Phillips added that Chelsea actually wanted to sell Fofana, rather than loan him out.

Eventually, Union Berlin – who finished fourth in the Bundesliga last season – offered to take the striker on loan for the 2023/24 campaign, which the Blues agreed to.

It looks as if that could turn out to be a very smart move by Chelsea, as Fofana has needed no time to settle.

Union Berlin faced Atalanta in a pre-season friendly on Saturday, a clash which initially looked like it could be a tough test.

However, the German side and Fofana ran riot, recording a 4-1 win with the Chelsea loanee scoring two goals.

David Datro Fofana must impress Chelsea this season

If rumours of Fofana failing to impress Lampard and others is true, then the 2023/24 campaign is huge for the 20-year-old.

Chelsea are not short of cash, and are usually ruthless when it comes to replacing those who aren’t performing – Stamford Bridge is not a place for patience, to say the least.

Therefore, if Fofana fails to set the Bundesliga alight in the 2023/24 campaign, we wouldn’t be surprised to see Chelsea attempt to offload him on a permanent basis next summer, in light of what Phillips reported.

Of course, the Ouragahio-born wonderkid is young and should be given time, but knowing Chelsea, we doubt he will be afforded much patience if he underwhelms in Germany.
