‘Question marks’… Shay Given shares whether he thinks Mauricio Pochettino should be sacked by Chelsea

Shay Given has given an interesting verdict on Mauricio Pochettino’s current position at Chelsea.

Mauricio Pochettino, 51, is halfway through his first season in the manager’s dugout at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea sit ninth in the Premier League table right now, which is very uninspiring with their young squad stacked with bags of potential. They’re losing 1-0 on aggregate to Middlesbrough from the first leg of a Carabao Cup semi-final tie, too.

So, is the Blues head coach under some pressure because of the indifferent results?

Football.London claimed last week that Chelsea have no immediate intention of sacking Pochettino.

In addition, The Independent reported that Chelsea staff think Pochettino is doing a better job at the club than his predecessor Graham Potter.

Given, who’s a former Premier League goalkeeper and now pundit, doesn’t think Pochettino should be sacked by Chelsea. He’s called him the right man to keep steering the ship for the Blues.

However, he does admit that the manager has to get more out of this squad moving forward.

Speaking on the BBC’s The Monday Night Club, Given commented on Pochettino: “There is question marks over him. Is he the right man to lead Chelsea forward? I think he is but at the same time he should be getting more out of them players in midfield, you could put them down on paper and say it’s the dream team, but they are not hitting the heights of previous clubs.”

Similarly, we don’t see much benefit in pushing the button and ejecting Pochettino now. We’d like a bit more consistency and a stronger 2024, though.

Most Blues fans are well aware this young group is at the start of a journey. Therefore, the expectations have been lowered from what we’ve set during most of the 21st century.

Now, Chelsea fans really want to see this new-look team emerge under Pochettino with a clear style of football.

In fairness, Pochettino’s finally beginning to find some sort of his consistency in starting line-up. That’s going to be so helpful moving forward with a core group of players!
