‘Quite strange’: Darren Bent baffled after hearing which player Chelsea are now trying to sign

Darren Bent has been left completely puzzled by rumours Chelsea want to sign Brighton’s Robert Sanchez this summer.

Following the sale of Edouard Mendy, Chelsea are now a senior goalkeeper light and need competition for Kepa Arrizabalaga at Stamford Bridge.

Brighton keeper Robert Sanchez, 25, is now linked with a potential move to the Blues.

Well-respected journalist Simon Phillips claimed on his Substack this week that Sanchez is “very keen” to join Chelsea as soon as possible.

TalkSPORT pundit Bent is baffled that Chelsea are pursuing a deal for Sanchez, who lost his starting position at Premier League rivals Brighton during the second half of last season.

When discussing Chelsea links to Sanchez, Bent told talkSPORT: “Bringing in Robert Sanchez, who doesn’t even start for Brighton now; he’s not even their number one, I find it quite strange.”

This comes after claims that Chelsea have identified Sanchez as their priority target in the keeper position.

Nathan Gissing reported on Gianluca Di Marzio’s website yesterday that Chelsea want to sign £20million-rated Sanchez. In addition, the Spanish shot-stopper is expected to exit Brighton during this summer window.

We can understand the reasoning behind Sanchez arriving at Chelsea to play the role of back-up keeper and to provide competition for Kepa.

If Kepa’s got the faith of Mauricio Pochettino to start the season as the first-choice goalkeeper, Sanchez is a decent understudy on the bench.

Incidentally, the pair know each other from the Spanish national team and could form a close-knit unit.
