Reports have claimed that Todd Boehly was left stunned that both Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen were allowed to run down their contracts and leave Chelsea for free.

According to The Athletic, the new owners are determined to not allow the situation happen again and lose a key player for free.

The two defenders were important members of the side that won the Champions League in 2021, with Rudiger especially establishing himself as one of the best defenders in the league.

However, sanctions put on the side during the final months of Roman Abramovich’s tenure saw them unable to negotiate new deals for either defender.

They both left for two of the World’s biggest sides, with Rudiger and Christensen joining Real Madrid and Barcelona respectively.

They have both been important members of their new side, as they battle for the title in Spain.

Boehly stunned Rudiger and Christensen left

Boehly was reportedly left bemused at how the situation played out that allowed them to leave for free.

Reports about Mason Mount’s future may lean in to this mode of thinking.

It has been claimed that Chelsea are putting off talks over a new contract for the England international until the end of the season, despite uncertainty over whether he will stay at the club.

He is attracting interest from Premier League giants, with Manchester United leading the way in that regard.

However, it is likely that the situation is sorted either way at the end of this campaign. Mount will either sign a new deal or be sold in the summer.

As for the centre-back role, Chelsea have struggled to maintain the high standards particularly set by Rudiger.

Kalidou Koulibaly, who was seemingly signed as a direct replacement for the German, has simply not lived up to the standards this season.
