Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has handed Chelsea starlet Jesse Derry the ultimate stamp of approval after his breakthrough season.

Jesse Derry has caught the eye at Chelsea since joining from Crystal Palace.

The 18-year-old made an immediate impact for the Under-21s, racking up six goals and three assists in the Premier League 2. And his form for both club and the England U19 national team quickly piqued the attention of the senior coaching staff at Cobham.

Derry made his senior Chelsea debut as a second-half substitute during a 4–0 FA Cup victory against Hull City in February 2026. This then saw him make his dream first Premier League start against Nottingham Forest at Stamford Bridge in May.

However, after a nasty head collision, his season was cut slightly short.

Rio Ferdinand has high hopes for Jesse Derry

Speaking on The Long Ball podcast, Rio Ferdinand has labelled Chelsea’s Jesse Derry as the best player in England under the age of 20 currently.

‘’Jesse Derry is the best U20 in the UK. Level-headed. As an individual, this kid is a killer. The best thing about him is he loves football.

“He has a chance to be a star. When no one is looking and you’re working, there are rewards. This kid is one of those.’’

Jesse Derry’s chances at Chelsea next season

Jesse Derry’s path to a permanent first-team role at Chelsea has suddenly received a massive boost.

The club’s willingness to listen to summer transfer offers for left-wingers Jamie Gittens and Alejandro Garnacho is set to vacate a crucial position on the left flank.

While Chelsea still intends to recruit a versatile forward in the upcoming transfer window, clearing out senior wingers directly prevents Derry’s pathway from being blocked.

It’ll all be down to how he performs this pre-season under Xabi Alonso.
