Former Chelsea player Saul Niguez has taken to Instagram to praise Kepa Arrizabalaga for his performance against Aston Villa yesterday.

The 28-year-old produced arguably his greatest display for the Blues as a lacklustre performance still ended up with three points coming back to London.

The Spaniard made seven saves, including one of the best of the season when he denied Danny Ings from point-blank range.

A triple save in the first half should have been an indicator that it wasn’t going to be Villa’s day, as pressure continued to rise on Steven Gerrard in the dugout.

Graham Potter was extremely complimentary of Kepa in his post-match interview, describing his performance as ‘world-class’.

Another figure who was quick to praise the ‘keeper was Saul, who was a teammate during his forgettable loan spell last season.

The midfielder was one of a number of players who took to social media to send praise Kepa’s way.

The performance yesterday will only further solidify his place as the club’s number one, with him so far starting every game since Potter came in.

Edouard Mendy has been back from injury for a number of weeks now, however has struggled to break back into the team.

For the last two seasons, he had been an ever-present in the Premier League, with the Spaniard being only really used in cup competitions under Thomas Tuchel.

The situation currently playing out would’ve taken some believing 12 months ago, when Mendy had recently been crowned the UEFA goalkeeper of the year following Chelsea’s Champions League heroics.

Kepa will surely keep his place for the challenging local derby against Brentford during this week, and Mendy may have to continue to wait for any opportunity to break back into the side.
