Scott Minto suggests Mauricio Pochettino should use 19-year-old Chelsea player down the right-wing

Scott Minto thinks Chelsea’s Diego Moreira would be so much more effective playing as a right-winger.

Chelsea secured a 2-1 win over AFC Wimbledon last night in the Carabao Cup, but it was a difficult evening for Diego Moreira.

Moreira, who’s just 19, made his competitive first-team debut last night in Chelsea colours.

The left-footed attacker started the game on the left wing. Unfortunately, Blues head coach Mauricio Pochettino substituted him off at half time after a difficult first 45 minutes.

Minto was on co-commentary watching Chelsea’s victory against League Two side AFC Wimbledon and noticed Moreira struggle in the first half.

He thinks the 19-year-old forward didn’t suit the left-wing role in the slightest.

“I think it’s difficult for him. If you’ve not got so much pace to burn, if you’re playing on the left-hand side and you’re left-footed, you’re going to want to go down the outside all the time,” Minto told talkSPORT 2 (8:35pm, 30 August).

“I think it would almost be better for him [on the right], but it’s not going to happen because on the other side [Noni] Madueke looks really sharp. I think he would be better on the right-hand side. He could come in and play little wall passes or feint to go inside, then go outside and whip the ball in.”

We doubt there would be long queue of clubs waiting to sign Moreira on loan based off yesterday, but let’s remember it was his first minutes in Chelsea’s first team before going overboard on the criticism.

Jason Cundy said Moreira’s decision making was “dreadful” against AFC Wimbledon (official club coverage). The Portuguese teenager is still a very raw talent and finding his feet in a new country.

We would like to see him playing games for the Under-21s side in the next few months before assessing where he’s at in January.
