‘Shameful’: Chelsea fans are fuming at what has just happened in the Premier League

Reports over the last few days have confirmed that Chelsea will somewhat be taking part in a piece of history later this year.

However, the news that they will be part of the first fixture on Christmas Eve in 27 years is certainly not something they wished to be involved in.

The manic December schedule was always going to provide challenges, however Mauricio Pochettino was surely not planning to put together a side less than 12 hours before Christmas Day.

Of course, the real losers from the scenario are the match-going fans, who face the dilemma of ruining festive plans for their love of the sport.

Supporters have taken to Twitter to state their distaste at the decision.

One user said: “These reports are deeply worrying. No PL fixture has been played on Xmas Eve for 27 years & this decision would be unacceptable. We should be helping fans travel to away fixtures – it would be a spit in the face of supporters if another hurdle is placed in their way.”

Another added: “Wolves v Chelsea will be the first Xmas Eve fixture in 27 years. There has been no consultation with supporters & it will force people to cancel Xmas plans with families. This is a spit in the face of all supporters, regardless of your club.”

A third stated: “Wolves v Chelsea on Christmas Eve. The PL and TV broadcasters should just admit they give matchgoing fans zero consideration in fixture scheduling. Boycotting will do nothing, ground will still be full and TV audiences will still be there. Shameful.”

Pochettino will be under the cosh during this period, and likely needing to call upon his deep squad at this stage, providing they all remain match fit up to then.
