The number of Chelsea board members that actually wanted to keep Mauricio Pochettino at the club

Reports are starting to emerge that Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly wanted Mauricio Pochettino to remain at Stamford Bridge.

However, it does not look like Todd Boehly was the only board member at Chelsea pushing for Mauricio Pochettino to be retained as manager.

The 52-year-old, who was recently named as the new United States boss, left Stamford Bridge at the end of last season by mutual consent.

Since then, it has been claimed that Boehly fought to keep Pochettino at Chelsea, with others at the club not convinced with his performance in the dugout.

Mauricio Pochettino still had supporters at Chelsea

Leaving Chelsea by mutual consent in May, there were clearly people at the club who were happy for Pochettino to depart.

That does not include Boehly, though. According to GiveMeSport, the Chelsea co-owner and at least two other board members continued to back the Argentine to the very end.

That was not enough, however, and Pochettino has since been replaced by Enzo Maresca.

Maresca’s start to life as Chelsea manager has been identical to Pochettino’s. Under the Italian, the Blues have taken four points from their first three Premier League fixtures this season after drawing to Crystal Palace, beating Wolverhampton Wanderers and losing to Manchester City.

Last term, Chelsea started their campaign under Pochettino with a draw with Liverpool, loss to West Ham United and win against Luton Town.

It remains to be seen whether Maresca is the answer for Chelsea, but Pochettino departing was probably best for everyone.

The fact that the new USA boss did leave by mutual consent shows that he also had concerns on his side.

It is a shame because Chelsea were really starting to pick up under him. They won all five of their final five Premier League fixtures last season, helping the club to finish sixth in the table.

In the 2022/23 campaign, Chelsea came 12th, so there was definitely improvement under Pochettino.
