The warning Enzo Maresca sent to Levi Colwill after one of Chelsea’s pre-season games

New Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca seems to be a fan of central defender Levi Colwill.

Enzo Maresca‘s predecessor Mauricio Pochettino often used Levi Colwill at left-back last season.

However, the Chelsea manager has exclusively used the 21-year-old as a centre-back this term, his natural position.

Colwill has quickly become a key player for Maresca, but it looks like the Italian had one concern about him heading into this season. As for the English youngster, Colwill wasn’t sure if Chelsea valued him at one stage.

What Enzo Maresca told Levi Colwill after Chelsea’s 2-2 draw with Wrexham

Chelsea kicked off their pre-season with a 2-2 draw with Wrexham, Maresca’s first unofficial game in charge.

It was a friendly, but Colwill and James McClean did not get the memo after they got into a bust-up only minutes into the match.

According to GiveMeSport, Maresca actually liked the passion that Colwill showed after being on the receiving end of a late challenge.

However, the same outlet claims that the 44-year-old also warned his player that he needs to maintain his cool going forward and not leave himself open to picking up silly yellow cards.

In another conversation, Colwill and Maresca spoke about the England international’s preferred position.

Chelsea need to improve their discipline

Colwill only picked up two yellow cards in the Premier League last season, which is pretty good for a defender.

As a whole, though, Chelsea need to improve their disciplinary record. During the 2023/24 campaign, they picked up 105 yellow cards, the most in the division, according to WhoScored.

However, they showed no signs of doing so in their recent game against Bournemouth after eight of their players were cautioned.

Fourteen yellow cards were issued in total by Anthony Taylor, who will not be refereeing this weekend.

It is something that Maresca is going to have to talk to Colwill and the rest of the Chelsea squad about, if the former Leicester City boss has not already.
