‘The worst’… Petr Cech recalls terrible Chelsea performance where he expected to concede from ‘every shot’

Petr Cech did not have too many bad games in a Chelsea shirt, and his numbers prove it.

After all, this was a goalkeeper who kept 228 clean sheets for Chelsea. Cech also conceded fewer goals than the number of matches he played, which is quite impressive.

He is the kind of shot-stopper that Enzo Maresca wished he had right now. Chelsea fans probably want Robert Sanchez sold after some of the mistakes that he has made this season.

There was one match, though, where Cech felt that he really struggled, and the Chelsea legend has been speaking about it.

Petr Cech on Liverpool nightmare

Today, Liverpool are a really dangerous team going forward, largely thanks to Mohamed Salah. Salah’s Premier League numbers have been crazy this season, with the Egyptian on 42 goal contributions currently.

Rewind to 2009, and the Reds were also a good attacking team, putting four past Chelsea in the second leg of their quarter-final Champions League tie.

It was an exciting game for the neutral, as the Blues also managed to score four goals, but it was a match for the two goalkeepers to forget. Cech was one of them.

“I think the Champions League game against Liverpool, which finished 4-4, is probably one of the worst games I ever played,” the 42-year-old told Ben Foster on Amazon Prime Video Sport.

“It felt so wrong from the first second of the game. In that moment, I felt like every shot would go in because it felt like I couldn’t stop anything.”

Again, though, Cech did not have too many bad games in a blue shirt. He will go down as one of Chelsea’s best ever deals.

It is no surprise that Cech felt so anxious during that exhilarating 4-4 draw at Stamford Bridge.

As per Sofascore, he made one error that led to a goal on the night, while his kicking was not great. The retired Czech Republic international had a passing accuracy of just 37%. And in total, he finished the game having made just two saves.

Still, Chelsea would kill to have a goalkeeper like Cech now. Chelsea have high hopes for Mike Penders; maybe he can be the solution to their shot-stopper problem.
