‘Wasted money’… Harry Redknapp says 22-year-old Chelsea player is ‘very average’

Harry Redknapp hasn’t held back with a pretty damning verdict on Chelsea’s Mykhailo Mudryk.

Mykhailo Mudryk, who’s just 22, is a player definitely still trying to prove himself at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues attacker is under-fire with some criticism, like several of his teammates, because of the club’s poor form this season.

However, he’s perhaps under the spotlight more than most because of the £89million deal (BBC) it cost to sign him at the start of 2023.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side sit 10th in the Premier League table following the midweek defeat to Manchester United.

Harry Redknapp rant on Chelsea

Redknapp has given a pretty crushing assessment on the state of Chelsea at this moment in time. This included a dig at the club’s transfer strategy, with Mudryk in the firing line for his performances.

“I think any time is a good time to face Chelsea this season, I have to be truthful. They look a very, very average team at the moment,” Redknapp told talkSPORT (8th December).

“They have had great teams over the years but they have recruited badly this year. They’ve wasted money on very average players. £90million on Mudryk. £100million. It’s crazy money they have spent and they are nowhere near a team.

“I love Pochettino, great guy, real top manager but he has his work cut out as that is going to be a long, long process to sorting that team out to get them back challenging for a top four spot again.”

It’s a very harsh verdict from Redknapp on Mudryk and certainly one that we’re not prepared to match in equal measure.

However, we can understand why there’s so much frustration from pundits and supporters towards him.

Speaking via talkSPORT this week, Gabby Agbonlahor described Mudryk as “so erratic” and thinks he needs one-on-one coaching.

We agree that the youngster needs to raise his levels and provide more of an attacking output. He’s got two goals and two assists in 14 games across all competitions so far this season.

This inconsistency can happen in emerging talents that are learning on the job at this level, though.
