Wesley Fofana would have enjoyed last week despite not getting an opportunity to play for Chelsea.

The central defender has been on the sidelines because of a concussion, but in his absence, the Blues managed victories over Liverpool and Benfica.

Estevao Willian scored a stoppage-time winner versus the former, much to the delight of Chelsea supporters, who saw their team get one over their rivals.

Fofana could now be about to give them another reason to be happy. Last month, Fofana discussed new signing Alejandro Garnacho, hailing him as a “top player”.

Enzo Maresca has had to deal with an injury crisis in central defence. As well as Fofana, the Chelsea manager has also been without Levi Colwill and Tosin Adarabioyo, while Trevoh Chalobah missed the win against Liverpool because of suspension.

However, in a boost to Maresca, Fofana trained on Tuesday, as seen in a post shared by Chelsea’s official Instagram account.

It means that the 24-year-old should be available for the Blues’ next Premier League game against Nottingham Forest.

Despite not finishing the Liverpool match, Chelsea assistant manager Willy Caballero confirmed that there are no issues with Benoit Badiashile or Josh Acheampong, so Maresca should have quite a few central defenders to choose from at the City Ground next Saturday.

Wesley Fofana could face fight to get back into team

While Fofana may be available for selection again, he may have to battle his way back into Maresca’s starting XI.

Badiashile and Acheampong were excellent against Arne Slot’s side, containing Mohamed Salah and Alexander Isak superbly.

Former Chelsea defender Frank Leboeuf discussed Badiashile and Acheampong after the game and said: “I was very surprised by Benoit Badiashile and Josh Acheampong. Very strong, organised, talking and covering for each other. They were absolutely outstanding.”

Whoever starts in central defence at the City Ground, Chelsea will be expected to beat Forest. They are on a dreadful run of form right now, with new manager Ange Postecoglou yet to win a game in charge. Chelsea fans may be happy at this moment in time, but that will change if Forest are not defeated.
