Chelsea recently lost their captain Reece James to another hamstring injury.
With the Chelsea skipper unavailable for selection, one club source has told The Sun that Conor Gallagher is now the only fit player in Mauricio Pochettino‘s squad who understands what it means to put on the blue shirt.
Like James, Gallagher has been at Chelsea since he was a kid, coming through the club’s academy.
Having sold so many of their academy graduates in recent transfer windows, the likes of Mason Mount, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Billy Gilmour, there are not too many players like Gallagher and James left in Chelsea’s squad.
What makes matters worse is that the Blues could decide to sell the 23-year-old soon as his contract continues to run down.

Conor Gallagher understands Chelsea
Gallagher obviously is one of the few players in this Chelsea squad who understand what it means to be a player for the club.
And it is clear that Pochettino shares that sentiment, making the Englishman club captain in the absence of James and Ben Chilwell.
You can talk about Chelsea lacking a clinical striker all day, which is unquestionably one of the many problems at Stamford Bridge right now. But who knows? Maybe they could also benefit from having more players like Gallagher on the pitch, players who are willing to do anything for the club that they love.
With James set to be out for a while and Chilwell still not back yet from his own injury, Gallagher is going to hold on to the captain’s armband for a bit longer and more is going to be expected of the England midfielder.
Hopefully he can help Chelsea’s new signings to settle and understand the culture of the club, or at least what the culture used to be anyway. It may take some time before that is actually restored.
