Chelsea have established themselves as the frontrunners to sign Xavi Simons this summer, and are in concrete talks over making another signing to address their attack.

The Blues have already brought in Joao Pedro, Jamie Gittens and Liam Delap to bring a new look to their frontline for next season, while Estevao Willian can now be considered a Chelsea player after his long-awaited move from Palmeiras.

Simons has been working hard over the summer to stay in shape, and has maintained a presence in the RB Leipzig squad for their pre-season friendlies despite heavy interest from the Blues.

It was reported that Chelsea would need to pay £52m for the Bundesliga side to accept, with them keen to make a profit on a player they only permanently signed back in January.

Chelsea to make formal offer for Xavi Simons after positive talks

The Blues need to sell players first though, however have made great strides towards that with the expected departure of Joao Felix to Al Nassr.

This has allowed the Blues to move forward with their efforts to sign Simons, and further talks before making their first offer.

Journalist Ben Jacobs has claimed that Chelsea are now prepared to make that offer off the back of positive talks over the last few days with the Bundesliga side.

He said: “Understand Chelsea are preparing a formal offer for Xavi Simons following positive talks with Leipzig. Discussions have accelerated over the past few days.”

Simons wasn’t Chelsea’s dream signing

The attacking talent already brought in to the first team squad is vast, and is only going to look stronger if Simons is added to it.

However, it has been claimed that there were a number of other big-name players on Chelsea’s shortlist for the summer, and one of them was actually one they would have preferred to sign.

It has been reported Morgan Rogers was Chelsea’s dream signing this summer, however Aston Villa’s reluctance to sell saw them not make a concrete approach to them.

Simons would be more than good enough as a consolation prize though, and his ability to play in multiple positions in attack is something that Enzo Maresca will love.
