What Chelsea are now ‘expecting’ to happen with Renato Veiga after demand from the player

While Joao Felix’s short stint at Chelsea before moving on loan has been well-documented, another summer signing is also currently plying his trade away from Stamford Bridge.

Renato Veiga has been a regular at the back for Juventus in 2025 when fit, where he has proven to be a popular addition to the squad.

Italian media have been impressed by Veiga, while Blues fans have been left ruing the talent that slipped through Enzo Maresca’s fingers this season.

Chelsea brought in the Portugal international during the summer transfer window, with it expected that he was going to mostly provide cover for Marc Cucurella at left-back.

However, it emerged in January that Veiga sees himself as a centre-back, a position he had rarely played during his few months at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea expecting Renato Veiga to return this summer

It was predicted to The Chelsea Chronicle that if the defender became a regular in the backline with the Italian side then Veiga would move to Juventus permanently.

However, the situation seems to have changed, perhaps based off the fact that the Blues have no real cover for Cucurella right now.

The Chelsea Chronicle understands that Chelsea are expecting Veiga to be back at Stamford Bridge this summer.

This is despite him performing well during his loan spell at Juventus, however the Serie A side only saw him as a short-term option.

Veiga could replace Chelsea centre-back

If Veiga is to get his wish to play in a more central position, it would likely come at the expense of a current Blues centre-back.

With him being left-footed, it is most likely to be on that side of the two, with Levi Colwill being one of the few players in the side mostly seen as untouchable.

This could pose danger for Benoit Badiashile, and The Chelsea Chronicle understands his future is by no means safe, with a review set for the summer of their options at the back.

The Frenchman has played just five Premier League games this season, and has been a victim of injury problems that have plagued him since he moved to the club.
