Chelsea defender Renato Veiga will be pleased with how his loan spell at Juventus is going.

Renato Veiga joined Juventus in the January transfer window and has played the full 90 minutes in all of the Old Lady’s last three Serie A matches.

The above includes a 1-0 win against rivals Inter Milan on Sunday, with the 21-year-old having a phenomenal game.

Juventus paid just under £4m for Veiga’s services, which is now starting to look like a bargain.

Renato Veiga’s number of defensive actions vs Inter Milan

Had Juventus not signed Veiga last month, they may have lost Sunday’s game against Inter.

The Portuguese proved to be a real rock in Thiago Motta’s backline, making an impressive 11 defensive actions. It was the most recorded in the match.

The next highest on the list was Juventus midfielder Weston McKennie, who registered six. It shows that maybe Veiga did have something to offer Chelsea in central defence.

Juventus’ loan signing is not just impressing with his defending, though. Veiga’s passing caught Chelsea fans’ attention in the Italian club’s 2-1 win against PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League last week.

Did Chelsea make a mistake loaning Renato Veiga to Juventus?

Even before Veiga kicked a ball for Juventus, Chelsea’s decision to loan out the Portugal international was questionable.

With Enzo Maresca not considering Ben Chilwell as a genuine option, Veiga was the only other left-back the Italian had to provide cover for Marc Cucurella.

Maresca is without Wesley Fofana and Benoit Badiashile as well because of injury, while Levi Colwill’s form has been shocking lately. Ultimately, there was also room to play Veiga in central defence.

Hopefully the club can learn from this and decide to keep hold of Veiga. Loaning the former Basel man to Juventus was a mistake, selling him to them or another club would be an even bigger one.

At the Allianz Stadium, Veiga is proving that he can be a very effective central defender.
