Reports have claimed that Mauricio Pochettino was left frustrated in the first half of Chelsea’s EFL Cup victory last night against Blackburn Rovers.
According to the Evening Standard, the manager was asking the question as to why they hadn’t been given a penalty for a deemed foul on Raheem Sterling in the opening minutes.
Pochettino will have been content to see his side pick up a relatively comfortable 2-0 victory against their lower-league opposition last night, as they booked their place in the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup.
With Manchester City, Arsenal, Tottenham and Manchester United all already eliminated from the competition, the Blues should now really believe that they can book their place in the very late stages of the competition before Christmas.
While it was a comfortable victory in the end, they were frustrated for a while in the first half by Blackburn. However, they will be incensed that they weren’t given a penalty early in the game.
After Sterling was seemingly fouled, the referee chose not to award the Blues a spot kick, which would have given Cole Palmer an opportunity for another goal at Stamford Bridge.
Pochettino angry at no penalty
The 28-year-old did find the net in the second half, although a lot of the praise for that goal did end up at Palmer’s door.
Pochettino will now be looking ahead to his return to North London as the Blues prepare to take on Tottenham on Monday night.
Despite their opponents being top, a victory would surely get Chelsea’s season off and running at last.
It will be the third London derby in a row, with them being pegged back for a draw against Arsenal and falling to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Brentford at the weekend.
