Some at Chelsea think that Cole Palmer is a better player than Kai Havertz.

That is according to a report from The Athletic.

They claim that some people inside Chelsea have already voiced the belief that Cole Palmer is turning out to be the player they thought they were getting in Kai Havertz.

Havertz upgrade

Chelsea signed Havertz in a £71million deal (BBC) from Bayer Leverkusen back in 2020. At the time, he was one of the most highly-rated youngsters in the entire world, so most tipped him to rip up the Premier League.

The German attacker, who’s now 24, cemented his name in Blues folklore after scoring the winning goal in a Champions League final. However, his career never really took off at Stamford Bridge like most expected.

He scored 32 goals in 139 Chelsea appearances before being sold to rivals Arsenal in the summer.

As for Palmer, he completed a £40million transfer (Sky Sports) from Manchester City to Chelsea at the start of the season.

The 21-year-old playmaker is quickly emerging as quite a key component in attack this campaign for Mauricio Pochettino’s new-look side.

In our view, Palmer does already look like an upgrade on Havertz!

Cole Palmer taking responsibility

It’s been really impressive to watch Palmer, who only turned 21 in May, arrive at Chelsea with such authority.

The left-footed attacking midfielder is still relatively inexperienced when it comes to senior football, but you wouldn’t know it with the way he carries himself on the pitch.

Speaking via Football.London yesterday, Pochettino hailed Palmer as a “clever” player who’s delivering some great performances right now.

He’s the new penalty taker with three converted spot-kicks so far. A lot of the team’s best attacks comes through him , too.

We can’t wait to watch how the youngster develops in the months ahead when he’s playing week in week out. There’s no way he’s being dropped from Pochettino’s starting XI anytime soon.
