Reports have claimed that Chelsea are now hoping Christopher Nkunku can make his debut in the EFL Cup against Newcastle.

According to 90min, the Blues are hoping that he will be fit enough to play by the 19th of December, when they will look to book their place in the semi-finals of the competition.

Nkunku is yet to make his competitive debut for Chelsea after being brought in as the marquee addition to their attack this summer.

He was proving to do just that during the pre-season tour of the United States, however he fell to a knee problem during the final game of the tour against Borussia Dortmund.

The Frenchman is still yet to come back from that issue, however has dropped hints that he is approaching this moment.

He took to Instagram yesterday to hint that he was getting towards fitness, and a picture released by the club saw him back on the exercise bikes at Cobham alongside Raheem Sterling.

When Chelsea want Nkunku to debut

Now, it has been claimed that the club are hopeful he will actually be seen before Christmas, when they return to action in the EFL Cup.

The Blues put out a really strong side when they faced Blackburn Rovers in the prior round. It was the sight of Reece James’ first start for the club since he had fallen to injury on the opening game of the season.

This suggests that Mauricio Pochettino is looking to take the competition seriously, and potentially bring some silverware to mark his first season at Stamford Bridge.

With Manchester City, Arsenal and Tottenham all already knocked out, it suggests that there is an opportunity for a side like Chelsea to win the first trophy of the season in England.
