Jamie Redknapp thinks it’s “quite weird” that Mason Mount could leave Chelsea in this summer transfer window.

There’s been a wave of speculation in the media recently that suggests Mason Mount, 24, could exit Stamford Bridge at the end of the season.

With the Blues star’s contract at the club expiring next summer, the focus around his future has intensified.

Exit talk

The Daily Mail has explained this week that Chelsea are likely to sell Mount this summer if they can’t get him to agree a contract extension. They do add that Manchester United may soon launch a bid to sign the attacking midfielder, who’s valued at £85million by the Blues. Also, Arsenal and Liverpool are rival buyers for him.

Meanwhile, Sky Sports has claimed that Newcastle United and Tottenham are currently keeping an eye on the Mount situation.

Mount is a homegrown talent from Chelsea’s academy that has been instrumental in the first-team squad during recent years.

The “brilliant” attacking midfielder is a Champions League winner and has 36 England caps, but has gone through a dip in form during the 2022/23 season.

We’re confident he’ll be back to his best in the near future, whether that be at Stamford Bridge or elsewhere in the Premier League.

We can see the reasoning behind selling Mount this summer rather than letting him go for free a year later.

Sky Sports pundit Redknapp thinks it would be odd watching Mount play somewhere else other than Chelsea:

“I’m amazed that they’re going to let him go. He’s got one year left on his contract, so something has to give either way. I suppose what he’s thinking is that he wants parity with the top earners, and that is something we don’t know the ins and outs of with contract negotiations,” Redknapp told Sky Sports.

“To see Mason Mount play for someone else would feel quite weird to me. It feels like he’s so established as a Chelsea player.

“… He would be a brilliant signing for Manchester United.”
