Cesar Azpilicueta has told The Guardian that he got in touch with Chelsea teammate Kai Havertz after Germany were knocked out of the World Cup.
Spain’s loss to Japan had a knock-on effect that saw the Asian side top the group, ensuring there was not enough space for both European giants in the next round of the competition.
Despite a Havertz brace turning things around for Hansi Flick’s side, they did not secure a big enough swing in goal difference to overcome Spain.

Ironically, Spain were also heading out while Germany were losing. However, the Chelsea man’s impact off the bench ended Costa Rica’s dreams of qualification.
When acknowledging Havertz’s impact on Spain’s progression, Azpilicueta admitted he leant on his own experience of an early exit to console his club teammate.
Azpilicueta spoke to Havertz
He said: “I spoke to Kai. We have a great relationship. There’s not much you can say: that you’ve been through it, you know it’s hard and hopefully he has another chance in four years.”
The club captain was part of the 2014 side whose defence of the World Cup ended in embarrassing style.
He is certainly not to blame for Spain’s loss last week either. National media were stunned that he was replaced at half-time when the former champions were leading.

While Azpilicueta is looking forward to a potential match-up with Hakim Ziyech and Morocco in the Round of 16 today, Havertz will be forced to focus on the return to club football after Christmas.
The German’s form this season has been far from consistent. He has struggled to nail down a regular starting role since Graham Potter joined the club.
Despite their exit, his double off the bench showed again his ability to provide in the biggest moments, with Blues fans hoping there’ll be more occasions to show that this season.
