The only bit of business Chelsea have conducted this summer is the sale of Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid, but the Blues are about to wave goodbye to a second player.

Cucurella completed a move to Real Madrid on Monday morning, hours after reports had emerged that Jose Mourinho was set to raid Chelsea for the fifth time of his career since leaving London in 2007.

RATE 1-10: Is Marc Cucurella’s exit good business by Chelsea?

Any potential signings are yet to be made with Xabi Alonso not taking office until July 1. However, work is being done behind the scenes with Chelsea having to cull their enormous squad as loan players return.

One loan player returning to the club this summer is 20-year-old Jimmy-Jay Morgan. The attacker has just spent the 2025-26 season on loan at League One side Peterborough, where he certainly caught the eye.

Chelsea will sell Jimmy-Jay Morgan for a nominal fee

Morgan had a hand in 18 goals during his loan at Peterborough, scoring 14 times and laying on four more in assists. A successful loan in terms of numbers, even if many felt the numbers could be higher.

That form has caught the eye in the Championship. Reports emerged over the weekend that West Brom were in advanced talks to sign Morgan from Chelsea, with all parties keen to get a deal completed.

Now, Nizaar Kinsella has reported on BBC Sport’s website that a deal is advancing. It will see Chelsea receive a ‘nominal fee’, after spending £3m to sign Morgan from Southampton when he was 17, in 2022.

But Kinsella reports that alongside Chelsea receiving a tiny fee for Morgan, a ‘substantial’ sell-on clause will be included in the transfer. It might be that Chelsea end up winning a profit, but years down the line.

Which other returning loan players could be sold by Chelsea?

The obvious candidate is Axel Disasi. After a loan at West Ham, in which he impressed, the chances are that the French defender will look for pastures new in the upcoming window, regardless of Xabi Alonso.

Then there is Tyrique George. Everton have a permanent £25m clause in their loan, but the chances of Chelsea receiving such a fee for the academy product are small. Chelsea may have to accept a lesser fee.

Kendry Paez will return to Chelsea this summer after his loan at River Plate was cancelled. After a tricky 12 months, another loan is likely but a permanent exit for the Ecuador World Cup ace cannot be ruled out.

Mike Penders will be integrated into the squad and Chelsea plan to take a look at Aaron Anselmino before a decision is made. Nicolas Jackson’s future is a doubt, but his Senegal display was impressive.
