Willy Caballero witnessed an even more controversial sending off than Enzo Maresca’s seven years ago

Chelsea assistant manager Willy Caballero is no stranger to seeing red cards at Stamford Bridge.

His boss, Enzo Maresca, was the latest to be shown a red after wildly celebrating Chelsea‘s winner against Liverpool over the weekend.

Before that, Caballero was also present for Joao Pedro’s sending off against Benfica and Trevoh Chalobah’s dismissal against Brighton & Hove Albion.

As a Chelsea player, the former goalkeeper also saw red cards being handed out at Stamford Bridge.

When Alvaro Morata was handed two yellow cards in quick succession during Chelsea match

In 2018, Caballero was in goal for Chelsea in a chaotic FA Cup tie with Norwich City, which saw both Alvaro Morata and Pedro ejected from the match.

Chelsea won the game on penalties, with Caballero managing to save one spot-kick. But the ill-discipline that Morata and Pedro showed on the day could have cost the Blues.

Morata really failed to keep his emotions in check. He was booked for a dive and then shown another yellow straight after for protesting his innocence a bit too much.

Chelsea went on to win the FA Cup that year, beating Manchester United 1-0 in the final.

With the likes of Cole Palmer and Moises Caicedo in the team, Chelsea will be hoping to get their hands on that trophy and other major honours this season.

Caballero spoke about Caicedo after Chelsea’s win versus Liverpool, revealing that the club are keeping a close eye on the midfielder after all of the football that he has had to play.

What Enzo Maresca has said following his red card

Morata’s sending off seven years ago did not impact Chelsea, and neither did Maresca’s on Saturday.

His was the result of celebrating Chelsea being a couple of minutes away from beating the Premier League champions. By that stage, it was practically job done.

On Monday, Maresca took to Instagram to discuss the game and said: “Winning at the last moment was a beautiful joy for all of us. It was a shame not to be present at the final whistle to celebrate with our wonderful fans.”

Going forward, hopefully neither the Chelsea manager nor any of his players see another red this season.
