Chelsea still appear to be in for Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres.

It was recently reported that Chelsea had made a bid for Viktor Gyokeres, but multiple outlets, including the Evening Standard, were quick to play that and the Blues’ interest in him down.

However, since then, journalist Simon Phillips has claimed on his Substack that the 25-year-old is still “high on the shortlist” for the summer.

Gyokeres will not come cheap, though. He has a €100m (£85.8m) release clause in his contract and it has been reported that Sporting want to increase it to €120m (£103m).

He has been in sensational form for them this season, scoring 22 goals in 25 appearances.

Viktor Gyokeres high on Chelsea’s shortlist for the summer

While Chelsea may have opted against making a move for Gyokeres this month, it looks like he could still be an option for them in the summer.

His record this season is promising, but not to the extent where the club should go out and spend possibly £100m on him.

Gyokeres needs to do it for a bit longer before he warrants that kind of money.

However, it seems you cannot rule out the Blues making an attempt to sign him.

For now, Mauricio Pochettino is probably going to have to continue relying on Nicolas Jackson, Christopher Nkunku and Armando Broja if he stays, unless Chelsea are able to bring in a short-term striker option.

Looking at the table, the Blues have given themselves too much work to do in the race for top four. Spending big on a forward now may not make too much of a difference, so instead of potentially panic buying in this transfer window, it could be worth being patient and trying to get the man they really want, whoever that is, in the summer.
