‘Amazing’: Chelsea now want to sign 41-goal striker Pochettino once called a ‘great talent’

Chelsea are now said to be keen on bringing Kylian Mbappe to Stamford Bridge – a player Mauricio Pochettino knows very well.

The France international’s future has been plunged into uncertainty after it became clear he would not be signing a new contract – meaning his current terms expire in 12 months.

So, what has Mauricio Pochettino said about Kylian Mbappe previously as Chelsea try to reunite them? Let’s take a look…

What’s the story?

Well – as you may already know – the Argentine worked with the Frenchman at PSG.

Mbappe seemed to enjoy playing under Pochettino as he remarkably scored 67 goals in 75 appearances working with the South American, while also providing 34 assists.

The 24-year-old won the Ligue 1 title, the Trophée des Champions and also enjoyed Coupe de France success under the 51-year-old’s guidance.

After Mbappe scored a 94th minute winner against Real Madrid in the Champions League back in February 2022, Pochettino heaped praise on the Frenchman.

The Argentine told CBS Sports: “Mbappe is amazing. He’s a great talent. I can not find more words to praise him.”

In 43 appearances during the 2022/23 campaign, the Bondy-born striker incredibly scored 41 goals.

Chelsea may have to sacrifice other deals to sign Mbappe

By the sounds of it, Chelsea were not expecting Mbappe to become available this summer – Fabrizio Romano believes the Blues admire the striker and wanted him in 2022, but a deal may not be possible right now.

The reliable Italian journalist said on YouTube: “Chelsea had an interest in the situation one year ago and wanted to be informed on the Mbappe situation, but now, the feeling around Chelsea is that they want to do different things.

“They don’t want to enter into crazy things, so the situation around Chelsea and Mbappe is, at the moment, quiet.”

However – according to The Times – Chelsea are expected to throw their hat in the ring, so we cannot rule this one out just yet.

Having said that – from a financial aspect at least – we feel Chelsea would have to forget about signing the likes of Moises Caicedo, Andre Onana and others if they pursue Mbappe’s signature.
