Cesare Casadei transfer saga finally over as out-of-favour Chelsea midfielder joins Serie A club for puzzling fee

Cesare Casadei has finally agreed to leave Chelsea after weeks of speculation with numerous clubs across Europe.

Casadei signed for the Blues for £12.5 million (€15m) from Inter Milan in August 2022 and was expected to develop into a top midfielder.

He spent the second half of the 2022-23 season on loan at Reading and the first half of the 2023-24 campaign with then-Championship club Leicester City.

The 22-year-old impressed both fanbases to some degree but it’s fair to say that the moves were underwhelming considering his reputation as an Italy youth international.

Casadei reunited with former Foxes boss Enzo Maresca at Chelsea last summer and he received plenty of chances in the UEFA Conference League to establish himself as a quality squad player.

Unfortunately, the midfielder never quite looked comfortable in a Blues shirt and a January exit was always on the cards.

Cesare Casadei leaves Chelsea for Torino after Lazio interest

The first twist in this transfer saga came early on in the window when it was reported that Antonio Conte’s Napoli were leading the race to sign Casadei.

Then it became clear that fellow Serie A clubs Torino and Lazio were also interested in the young midfielder, with the latter thought to be closer to an agreement.

Champions League side Porto even made a last-minute move for Casadei and nobody seemed to know where he was going.

It then became clear two days ago that he was about to join Lazio, but that too didn’t last long. In the final update, Casadei’s move to Torino has now been confirmed by the club.

Chelsea will receive £12.5m – the same fee it cost to sign him – and a 25 per cent sell-on clause, according to Ben Jacobs, which means it’s in the Blues’ best interests for him to succeed.

Cesare Casadei transfer fee raises questions about Chelsea hierarchy

It can only be described as a failure that Chelsea have agreed to sell Casadei for £12.5m, two-and-a-half years after signing him for the same fee.

This proves at least one of two things: the Blues’ scouts were wrong about his ability and/or the club failed to help him fulfil his potential.

The loss of Casadei is not explicitly important to Chelsea’s season or even their long-term future; the concern is what it says about them as a destination for promising young players.

The Blues don’t want to find themselves in a situation where exciting prospects prefer to go elsewhere due to evidence of poor planning concerning previous signings.
