Chelsea could make a move to sign a former target under Roman Abramovich in the new year.

Right now, Chelsea have some very good midfield options, including Moises Caicedo.

In fact, some believe that the 23-year-old is actually the best midfielder in the Premier League. Gary Neville, for example, went as far as to say that Caicedo is the No.1 player in his position.

Despite having the likes of Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez, Chelsea are still being linked with another top midfielder.

Chelsea were interested in signing Sergej Milinkovic-Savic before Roman Abramovich exit

It is currently being reported that Chelsea are interested in signing Sergej Milinkovic-Savic when his contract at Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal expires at the end of the season.

He is not a player who has just come onto Chelsea’s radar, though. According to journalist Simon Phillips, who has been discussing the Milinkovic-Savic rumours on Si Phillips Talks Chelsea, the Blues considered signing him when Abramovich was still at the club.

It is more than understandable that Milinkovic-Savic has had admirers at Chelsea in the past.

During his time at Lazio, he was one of the top midfielders in Italy, capable of scoring and creating goals. He finished his Lazio career with almost 70 goals in 341 appearances.

Phillips has also claimed that Juventus’ Gleison Bremer was another target under Abramovich. The Brazilian has also been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge recently.

What Simone Inzaghi has said about Sergej Milinkovic-Savic

Someone who knows Milinkovic-Savic very well is Simone Inzaghi, who has managed the Serbia international at both Al-Hilal and Lazio.

It is fair to say that the former Inter Milan boss is a fan of his midfielder. “He is an extraordinary player who combines quality and quantity,” Inzaghi was recently quoted as saying by FIFA’s official website.

He will want to keep hold of him, but the chance to return to Europe may be too hard to turn down, especially if a huge club like Chelsea come knocking.
