Chelsea have now made signing £35m Premier League player a priority this summer

Chelsea could sign a new left-back in the summer transfer window.

Bringing in someone to cover Ben Chilwell will be Chelsea‘s priority when the market opens, a report from GiveMeSport claims.

And according to the same outlet, Fulham’s Antonee Robinson is the left-back who the Blues are seriously interested in, with the club believing that he has a value of around £35m.

Robinson has been a key player for Fulham this season, making 33 appearances in all competitions.

Journalist Simon Phillips also claimed in January that Chelsea were interested in signing Robinson when the winter transfer window was still open.

Antonee Robinson should not be Chelsea’s priority

Chelsea bringing in Robinson does make sense. More cover for Chilwell would be good, as the 27-year-old is not always fit.

However, although he is a centre-back by trade, Levi Colwill has shown this season that he can play at left-back, while Marc Cucurella is also still at the club for now.

Ultimately, we do not think Mauricio Pochettino would say no to another left-back, which is understandable, but the Blues’ priority for the summer probably needs to be strengthening up front.

Nicolas Jackson is the only recognised striker in Chelsea’s squad right now and has admitted that he should actually be doing better this season. The 22-year-old has scored 11 goals in 30 appearances.

Colwill, a central defender, continuing at left-back next term, does not sound ideal, but the fact that the England international and Cucurella are at Stamford Bridge means Pochettino does have alternatives to Chilwell.

If Armando Broja, who is currently on loan at Fulham, is sold in the summer, the same cannot really be said about Jackson. Therefore, going into the next transfer window, Chelsea would be wise to make signing a centre-forward a priority, rather than a left-back. If they can get both, though, no Chelsea supporter will complain.
