Chelsea’s backline has been an obvious problem during the opening months of the season, so it’s not the biggest surprise to see them linked with defensive transfer targets.
There’s so much attacking firepower when you look at the Chelsea squad. In fairness, Enzo Maresca deserves a lot of credit for taking the handbrake off and allowing the team to score freely.
However, the Blues defence is definitely still an area for concern. So far, they’ve conceded 16 goals in their opening 14 games across all competitions.
Rafael Benitez questioned the quality of Chelsea’s defending earlier this month, which is why it would be great to see them tighten up in the games ahead.

Chelsea really like Leece defender Patrick Dorgu
Journalist Simon Phillips has claimed via Substack on Wednesday that Chelsea aren’t completely happy with their left-back situation. As a result, they’re looking at potential full-back targets in the transfer market.
It is explained that the Blues have put Leece star Patrick Dorgu ‘very high’ on their left-back shortlist.
Phillips explains that Chelsea continue to scout the 20-year-old Serie A talent after watching him last season. Apparently, the left-back’s versatility to also cover at centre-half or on the wing ticks a huge box.
In addition, Dorgu is considered attainable by Chelsea despite his long-term contract with Leece, which doesn’t expire until 2029.
Chelsea target Dorgu could cost £25m to sign. For now, Maresca’s side will be closely watching how he performs in Italy’s top division, but it’s very interesting that they believe he’s within their reach.
During an interview last year, Dorgu admitted Chelsea are his favourite club. The Denmark international has an ambition to play in the Premier League during his career, too.
Do Chelsea need another left-back?
Chelsea clearly seem to think they need to recruit another left-sided defender, but let’s take a look at what’s available in the squad.
As it stands, Marc Cucurella is the outstanding option for the Blues at left-back. Also, versatile talent Renato Veiga has done a superb job filling into that role at times this season. We’ve even Reece James and Malo Gusto get minutes on the left as well.
Ben Chilwell is another high-profile left-back still with the Chelsea squad, albeit he’s on the fringes, but you could argue he needs replacing if he leaves.
Chelsea will allow Chilwell to leave in January amid interest from Leicester City, so let’s see how things develop in the full-back area.
