Chelsea still believe £40m player they went off signing would be perfect for their project

Chelsea have been linked with so many strikers this summer, including Jhon Duran and Samu Omorodion.

However, their interest in both Jhon Duran and Samu Omorodion cooled, with the latter eventually going on to join Porto from Atletico Madrid.

Since then, Brentford’s Ivan Toney has become a key target for Chelsea, while links with Napoli’s Victor Osimhen always remained.

There are multiple reasons why Chelsea want to sign Toney, but he is not the only Premier League centre-forward whom they like.

How Chelsea currently feel about Jhon Duran

As of now, it does not look like Chelsea are trying to agree a deal with Aston Villa to sign Duran.

However, Chelsea still seem to admire him, so it is not impossible that the Blues make a move for the 20-year-old if they cannot land Osimhen or Toney.

According to GiveMeSport, Duran is still seen as a centre-forward who would be ideal for Chelsea’s project and is valued at £40m by Villa.

Duran has already managed to make an impact for Villa this season, scoring the winner in their 2-1 victory against West Ham United. Ironically, West Ham have also tried to sign Duran this summer.

Who should Chelsea sign, Jhon Duran or Ivan Toney?

If it is a toss up between the two, then Toney. Chelsea went off the idea of signing Duran, and they should not reverse their thinking when someone like Toney is available.

Enzo Maresca already has young strikers in his squad, Nicolas Jackson and Marc Guiu. What the Italian needs is someone with experience and has proven that he can score in the Premier League.

Toney fits the criteria and rightly looks to be above Duran on the club’s list of No.9 targets at present.

That could change as they approach the final day of the transfer window. But if Chelsea fail to bring Osimhen to Stamford Bridge, the striker who looks to be their main target, then they should be prioritising Toney.
