The four reasons why Brentford’s Ivan Toney has become a target for Chelsea

Brentford striker Ivan Toney has become a serious target for Chelsea ahead of Friday’s transfer deadline.

Napoli’s Victor Osimhen still appears to be Chelsea‘s priority for the centre-forward position. It has been claimed that co-owner Behdad Eghbali is trying to agree a deal for Osimhen.

However, if he cannot do that, it looks like the Blues will turn all of their attention to Toney.

Toney, who has also been heavily linked with a move to Saudi Arabia, has missed both of Brentford’s first two Premier League games of the season because of all of the speculation surrounding his future.

Why Chelsea want to sign Ivan Toney from Brentford

According to Sky Sports journalist Kaveh Solhekol, there are four reasons why Chelsea want to bring Toney to Stamford Bridge.

The 28-year-old’s goalscoring record and his Premier League experience are just two of them.

In a post on X, Solhekol said: “Toney has become a target because of his scoring record, his Premier League experience, his relatively low current wages and the fact he has only one year left on his contract.”

Solhekol has also claimed that Chelsea have already made their play for Toney. But again, a deal only seems possible if the Blues fail to land Osimhen.

Ivan Toney signing would be better for Nicolas Jackson

A lot of Chelsea fans would probably prefer it if the club signed Osimhen over Toney.

Osimhen is younger and is playing at a much higher level than Toney. If you are Jackson, though, you would rather the Blues bring in the latter.

Turning 29 next year, the England international should not block Jackson’s pathway into the first team for too long, if at all.

Enzo Maresca could easily rotate between the two, whereas a high-profile signing like Osimhen will be expecting to start every game.

Jackson needs to be afforded time at Chelsea, according to Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer. And if the club bring Toney in, they may be able to give the 23-year-old that. He can develop at his own rate as Toney rotates with him and takes some of the pressure off his shoulders.
