Chelsea’s chances of signing Viktor Gyokeres in January emerge

Chelsea are one club who are being linked with Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres right now.

It comes as no surprise, with Viktor Gyokeres being arguably the best No.9 in world football at this moment in time.

The 26-year-old recently scored a hat-trick against Chelsea‘s Premier League rivals Manchester City, taking his goal tally this season to 23.

To put his latest exploits into perspective, only Lionel Messi and Christopher Nkunku had scored three goals against Manchester City in a single Champions League game before him.

Sporting Lisbon’s current Viktor Gyokeres stance

Being their talisman and having already scored more than 20 goals this term, Sporting will not want to lose Gyokeres, especially during the middle of the campaign.

Fortunately for them, though, it does not look like the Swede will be leaving in January in a potential blow to Chelsea and other suitors.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, there is a belief at Sporting that Gyokeres will not depart midway through the season.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, he said: “The feeling at Sporting is that Viktor Gyokeres can complete the season at the club and then decide his future destination in summer 2025. For sure, we expect Viktor Gyokeres to leave Sporting in 2025.”

Gyokeres is of interest to Chelsea following the club’s failure to sign Victor Osimhen during the summer. Right now, Nicolas Jackson is the only natural centre-forward in Enzo Maresca’s first team.

How Viktor Gyokeres and Nicolas Jackson compare

If Gyokeres does arrive at Stamford Bridge, then he would be coming in to replace Jackson in Maresca‘s starting XI.

A forward of the Swede’s calibre will obviously not be joining Chelsea to sit on the bench.

In terms of goals, Gyokeres would be a huge upgrade on Jackson. The 23-year-old has not done bad in a blue shirt, but his potential replacement’s numbers have been out of this world.

If Chelsea really do want to sign Gyokeres, though, it looks like they will have to wait until the summer, giving Jackson more time to prove himself. Do that, and the Blues will not need the Sweden international.
