Brighton are refusing to give up on signing Levi Colwill from Chelsea – and are even willing to smash their transfer record to get him.

That is according to talkSPORT.

So, what is the latest on Levi Colwill at Chelsea? Let’s take a look…

What’s the story?

Well, the 20-year-old put his name up in lights on loan at Brighton last season, making 17 appearances in the Premier League as the Seagulls qualified for the UEFA Europa League.

Colwill’s reputation has soared even higher this summer as he shines at the UEFA Under-21 EUROs, starting four out of five games as the England Under-21 side reached the final without conceding a single goal.

The Daily Mail believe Chelsea have firmly told Brighton that the centre-back is not for sale this summer, with The Times adding that Mauricio Pochettino wants the Blues to tie him down to a new contract.

Now – however – Brighton are preparing to smash their £30m transfer record, which was initially set when signing Joao Pedro from Watford, on a deal to sign Colwill.

TalkSPORT believe Brighton are willing to spend £40m on the Chelsea academy graduate, although we expect the Blues to reject that offer.

Chelsea must keep – and use – Levi Colwill

All of a sudden, Chelsea have one of the most exciting young defenders in Europe on their hands.

Colwill, who Lewis O’Brien tipped to have a “fantastic” career when speaking to Yorkshire Live after playing with him at Huddersfield, has oozed confidence and authority at the UEFA Under-21 EUROs, playing like an experienced 30-year-old.

One clip from the 3-0 win over Israel in Wednesday’s Semi-Final saw Colwill simply stand still and wait for the opposition to come to him, in a moment which showed just how comfortable he is out on the pitch right now.

After Kalidou Koulibaly departed Stamford Bridge, there is an opening for the Southampton-born wonderkid at Chelsea, and Pochettino simply has to start him next season.

Make no mistake about it, Colwill has the potential to be England’s best defender within a few years.
