Mauricio Pochettino is now keen to get Levi Colwill tied down to a new contract at Chelsea after his stunning season on loan at Brighton.

That is according to The Times.

So, what are the details involving Chelsea and Levi Colwill? Let’s take a look…

What’s the story?

Well, the 20-year-old did so well at Brighton that the Seagulls have even made a £30m bid for his services, although Chelsea swiftly rejected the offer.

Colwill – who is yet to actually make his Chelsea debut – made 17 appearances in the Premier League as Brighton finished sixth, securing a place in next season’s Europa League.

Pochettino – according to The Times – has admired the defender from afar during his time away from football management, and is keen to work with him at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea are now planning to hold talks with Colwill over a new contract, with his current terms set to expire in June 2025 – it can be assumed that any deal would involve a pay rise to recognise his improvement.

Colwill could replace Koulibaly at Chelsea

Some may question where Colwill’s game time will come from next season, as Pochettino already has Benoit Badiashile and Kalidou Koulibaly to use in the left-sided centre-back position.

However – according to the Evening Standard – Chelsea are hoping to sell the latter as Todd Boehly aims to pull off a squad overhaul.

Koulibaly endured a mixed debut campaign in west London, and the Blues believe his £300,000-a-week wages will make it difficult to offload him.

Even if the Senegal international ends up staying at Stamford Bridge, he does not represent the future at the age of 31, whereas Colwill, aged 20, does – therefore, Pochettino could even choose to start the youngster ahead of the £33m man.

Whatever happens, it sounds like the Argentine has big plans for the England Under-21 international at Chelsea.
