Chelsea were already expected to part ways with Djordje Petrovic this summer, however that possibility is now getting closer to being a reality.

Petrovic was up against it to break into the Blues’ first team for next season after Enzo Maresca had decided he wanted a different profile between the sticks for this campaign.

Despite an excellent loan spell at Strasbourg, the Serbian was not selected as part of the squad for the Club World Cup. Youngsters Mike Penders and Gabriel Slonina travelled instead.

It soon emerged that Petrovic had demanded to be the number one if he was to stay, however that request seems to have fallen on deaf ears.

Djordje Petrovic has a choice of clubs to join from Chelsea

Recent reports have stated that Sunderland were closing in on signing Petrovic this summer, as they look to build a team capable of Premier League survival.

However, The Chelsea Chronicle understands that they are not the only side in the race to sign the goalkeeper.

As per transfer insider Graeme Bailey, Bournemouth are also in the running, with both clubs having met Chelsea’s £25m demands to part ways.

Petrovic is currently training with the reserves at Cobham after not making the trip to the United States, and all parties will be hoping for a quick solution to the saga.

The future of Chelsea’s goalkeeping role

Robert Sanchez is currently the number one for Chelsea, however there are reports emerging of wavering confidence from Maresca in Sanchez.

The Blues were strongly linked with signing Mike Maignan before the transfer window temporarily closed before the Club World Cup. It remains to be seen if they enter the market again for the Frenchman or for any other new addition.

They will also have the enviable task of replacing their previous third-choice goalkeeper, after Marcus Bettinelli made the move to Manchester City.

It has been reported that Slonina is under consideration for the position, despite having never played a competitive game for Chelsea.
