‘Doesn’t make sense’… ESPN pundit left baffled by latest Chelsea transfer rumour he’s hearing

Chelsea’s activity in the transfer market across the last few windows has received its fair share of criticism, and the latest rumour has left one ESPN pundit in complete disbelief.

The summer transfer window has been another busy one so far at Stamford Bridge for both incomings and outgoings.

In terms of new signings, they continue to flood in with several additions. Aaron Anselmino officially signed as a Chelsea player on Thursday, albeit he’s returned to Boca Juniors on loan for the 2024/25 campaign.

Enzo Maresca’s side are still linked with making more new signings, too.

Atletico Madrid’s Samu Omorodion, who’s aged just 20, is strongly linked with an imminent move to Stamford Bridge.

It was claimed by journalist Fabrizio Romano on Thursday via X that Chelsea have agreed a £34.5m deal to sign Omorodion. The Spanish striker has been scheduled to undergo a medical ahead of signing a seven-year deal in West London.

ESPN pundit Don Hutchison has delivered a very negative response to reports that the Blues will sign the young forward, though.

When discussing Omorodion’s expected transfer, Hutchison told ESPN: “I mean, they signed a boy or they are signing a boy from Atletico Madrid who didn’t play any games or one at Granada, didn’t play any games at Atletico Madrid, and yet they have paid about £35million for him.

“He might be one for the future, but it just doesn’t make sense and they have put him on a seven-year contract. I have got no idea what they are trying to do.”

What to expect from Samu Omorodion

For Omorodion, he’ll be well advised to block out the noise when he joins Chelsea and get stuck into working with his teammates on a day-to-day basis.

It’s going to be a sizeable step up for the centre-forward. However, it looks like the Blues hierarchy see something in him and are prepared to invest in his potential.

Let’s remember that Omorodion is still in the very early stages of his senior career, so it’s not realistic to expect him to hit the ground running from day one next season. Instead, let’s hope he works as a perfect understudy to Nicolas Jackson, who should be aiming to kick on in his second year as a Chelsea player.

Omorodion scored eight goals in 35 matches last season during a loan spell for Alaves in the Spanish top division, but that’s about as far as his senior exposure goes. Blues fans may need to show patience with this particular investment.
