Enzo Maresca’s vision for Marc Guiu revealed at Chelsea as Sunderland agree loan deal

Marc Guiu was on the fringes of Chelsea’s squad during his debut season with them last year, so perhaps it’s no surprise that he’s on the verge of a transfer move.

Blues striker Marc Guiu, who’s only aged 19, moved to Stamford Bridge a year ago from Barcelona. He scored six goals in 16 appearances across all competitions last term, but he found it difficult to break into the strongest side.

Chelsea have rejected offers to buy Guiu from multiple clubs this summer because they don’t want to sell him. Instead, the Spanish teenager is set for the first loan spell of his career.

Journalist Fabrizio Romano claimed via X on Thursday that Sunderland have now agreed a deal to take Guiu on loan.

Even though RB Leipzig have shown interest in Guiu as a replacement for Benjamin Sesko, it looks like the Chelsea youngster will be staying in the Premier League with a temporary switch to the Stadium of Light.

Enzo Maresca has high hopes for Marc Guiu

According to CaughtOffside, Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca believes that Guiu can ‘contribute significantly’ at Stamford Bridge in the long term.

Even though the teenage centre-forward is departing on loan for the 2025/26 campaign, he’s still in the Blues’ plan moving forward. It is worth noting that he’s under contract with them until 2029, too.

Maresca pushed for Chelsea to sign Guiu from Barcelona last year, so it’s no great surprise that he still rates the young talent. Based off what we saw from him in limited minutes last term, he’s an exciting striker whose pace and movement make him a real handful to play against.

Chelsea considered sending Guiu on loan to Strasbourg, where he would be with plenty of familiar faces. However, it’s going to be exciting to see what he can in the Premier League with Sunderland, who have recruited since winning the Championship play-off final in May.

Joe Cole’s prediction on Marc Guiu

Back in December 2024, Chelsea hero Joe Cole tipped Guiu to have a massive future. He said: “This kid in two years’ time could be an established number nine – I think he can go all the way.”

If Guiu is to become Chelsea’s starting No.9, he will have to do it the hard way by lighting up the Premier League in Sunderland colours. We agree that he’s got all the tools and potential to become something quite special.

His route into the Blues XI looked even tougher this campaign following the arrivals of Joao Pedro and Liam Delap, but it’s a great opportunity at Sunderland to try and really make a name for himself.
