‘Everything I've heard’: Chelsea now 'confident’ they're going to sign 24-year-old Tuchel favourite in summer, journalist says

Dean Jones claimed that Chelsea now back themselves to complete the signing of Ousmane Dembele in the summer.

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Jones said the interactions between the Blues and Barcelona about a potential deal for Dembele last month have boosted the optimism inside Stamford Bridge.

Dembele decision

Right up until the last minute of the January window, fans were second guessing whether the Barca forward would be heading to South West London or not.

At one stage, the move was completely off the cards, with Chelsea reportedly ruling themselves out of a bid.

However, as the transfer sand timer slowly tipped over, the scenery changed.

Sky Sports reporter Gary Cotterill declared that the European champions were ‘right at the front of the queue to sign Dembele in this window.’

Eventually, deadline day concluded and Dembele had not reunited with Thomas Tuchel, his former Borussia Dortmund mentor.

Yet, as Jones explained, they could reconvene due to the Premier League side having a route to the France international.

“From everything I’ve heard, Chelsea are keen on the deal and it sounds to me like they’re pretty confident that he will join in the summer,” said the transfer expert.

“If I was to have a bet on it, I would say that Dembele in the summer is looking the most likely to move to Chelsea.”

Tuchel does the talking

Chelsea’s self-assurance might be spurred on by the manager himself.

Tuchel is apparently a huge admirer of Dembele because of their prior relationship at Dortmund.

“He’s a very good player, and I am very fortunate to have trained him in my time at Dortmund,” said the German coach on the 24-year-old earlier this season.

“It was only one year, it should have been longer, but I needed to leave and he decided to leave.”

However, if the two were to join forces again, one member of Chelsea’s front line might have to be moved aside.

The Blues are blessed in the attacking department, with Tuchel able to rotate his front three at will.

Add Dembele to the roster and the options become even greater, at the expense of ostracising one of the current players.

Depending on who features regularly between now and the campaign’s conclusion, a space may well appear for Barca’s soon-to-be free agent.
