Chelsea have had their improved bid for young centre-back Wesley Fofana turned down by the Leicester City despite the player’s desire for a move, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Despite the signing of Marc Cucurella from Brighton, for a reported fee of £55million plus £7m on add-ons, Chelsea are still in the market for another defender.

The Blues have now shifted their attention to Fofana, whom Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers recently described as one of the club’s “best assets”.

Romano claims that on Friday, Chelsea made a fresh bid worth over £70m for the 21-year-old, although Leicester City are reportedly not satisfied with the offer.

“Leicester City have turned down the proposal, and Rodgers also insists that [Fofana] is not for sale,” the Italian transfer expert wrote on Twitter.

“Chelsea are determined again to try for Fofana.

“The player would be 100 percent keen on the move.”

Earlier CBS Sports’ Ben Jacobs also claimed that Chelsea now consider Fofana their “number one target” and they are expected to be back with another improved bid for the centre-back.

The French defender’s signing a new five-year deal in March certainly put Leicester City in a comfortable negotiating position in this transfer saga.

On the other hand, Chelsea have plenty of time until the Premier League transfer window closes on 1 September to reach an agreement with the Foxes.
