Premier League club Everton are being linked with a move to re-sign Chelsea player Ross Barkley – and some Toffees fans on Twitter have claimed they would be open to the idea of him returning to Merseyside.
Chelsea signed Barkley from Everton for £15million back in January 2018, which was seen as a real bargain at the time.
Unfortunately, the attacking midfielder hasn’t quite been able to become a star name at Stamford Bridge. He’s scored 11 goals and made 11 assists in 94 appearances for the Blues.
He’s been back with the Chelsea squad under Thomas Tuchel this season, earning praise from Manchester City’s Jack Grealish for a cameo earlier in the campaign.
He’s made just two starts during this season, though, and had a disappointing spell out on loan with Aston Villa in the previous campaign.
If he departs, the Blues may already own a perfect replacement.
Everton linked with Chelsea squad man
According to TEAMtalk, Everton and Leeds United are both keen on a move to sign Barkley on loan with the option to buy. It is understood that Newcastle Untied are leading the race for him, though.
The report adds Chelsea are weighing up the creative playmaker’s future, as his current contract with them is due to expire in 2023 and he’s not a regular starter.
Rafael Benitez’s Everton side made an impressive start to the season and have a particularly strong starting line-up. However, they’ve fallen off massively because of injuries.
It looks like they need more squad depth, so bringing back ex-player Barkley could help thicken the options at Goodison Park in both midfield and attack.
Some Toffees fans want Barkley signed
A selection of Everton supporters on social media believe signing Barkley makes sense, albeit he wasn’t a popular figure when he departed for Chelsea a few years ago.
He was an important player during 179 Everton appearances as a youngster and obviously knows the club well. Reports suggest they’ll need to fend off Newcastle to get him.
