It’s certainly been a tough summer so far for Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher, whose future currently hangs in the balance.

Conor Gallagher, 24, has been strongly linked with a switch to Atletico Madrid in this transfer window. Whether his switch to Spain will be completed, remains to be seen.

Speaking via Football.London on Friday, Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca confirmed Gallagher is back training at Cobham, but he’s working away from the first-team squad while the club tries to resolve his future.

The Telegraph explained that Gallagher was out in Madrid ahead of a move to Atletico, but he flew back to England earlier this week because the deal isn’t done yet. Apparently, the La Liga club needs to sell one player before they can sign Gallagher, which is a deal they’re still committed to.

It sounds like Chelsea can do Gallagher a favour if they complete their pursuit to sign 24-year-old attacker Joao Felix from Atletico. According to journalist Fabrizio Romano via X on Friday, Chelsea are “getting closer” to agreeing the Felix transfer.

Atletico Madrid set deadline for Conor Gallagher deal

According to journalist Ben Jacobs on X, Atletico have set a deadline of Wednesday next week to try and resolve the Gallagher transfer saga.

It is explained that the Spanish side hope they’ll complete a player sell by then to make the Gallagher transfer happen.

In the meantime, Atletico boss Diego Simeone has spoken to the Chelsea midfielder on the phone to reassure him he’s still a priority signing this summer.

Chelsea’s midfield next season

It looks like Gallagher’s not in the plans moving forward. Let’s hope his future is sorted as quickly as possible so this saga doesn’t drag on any further. Meanwhile, Blues midfielder Lesley Uguochukwu completed a loan move to Southampton on Friday night.

So, what’s the Chelsea midfield going to look like in this new season?

On paper, Romeo Lavia, Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez are the star central midfielders at the club. There’s also Carney Chukwuemeka and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall competing for a starting position, too.

It’s going to be interesting to see if Christopher Nkunku is used further forward or as an attacking midfielder because that may have a big impact on the names above and their game time.
