‘Needless’: Chelsea fans aren’t happy after rumours they could sign £40m player

There’s fresh transfer rumours this week that suggest Chelsea could be interested in signing Inter Milan’s Federico Dimarco.

The Blues fanbase has reacted pretty negatively to the speculation on social media, though.

Federico Dimarco, who’s 25, is a very talented full-back. However, Chelsea do already have so many players in their squad for the left-sided defensive position.

Chelsea LB interest

Caught Offside claimed this week that Chelsea have registered an interest in signing Inter Milan defender Dimarco. They added that the Italy international is expected to sign a contract extension at the San Siro with Serie A giants Inter, but Chelsea have now made contact about signing him themselves.

He’s tailor-made for the Inter system as an attack-minded left wing-back. The left-back’s got 14 senior caps for Italy, too.

We feel like he’s a great full-back with so many fantastic attacking attributes, but it doesn’t make too much sense bringing him to Stamford Bridge unless there’s a couple of exits.

Ben Chilwell and Marc Cucurella are two senior left-backs in the Chelsea squad. In addition, the Blues can even play their versatile talents Levi Colwill or Ian Maatsen in that role if they need.

Dimarco, who 90min reportedly valued at £40million back in February, should stay put in Milan.

Fans don’t want Federico Dimarco

A selection of Chelsea fans on social media have reacted pretty firmly to this Dimarco transfer speculation.

In fairness, the fanbase has grown tired of several managers dealing with oversized squads in recent years at Stamford Bridge. The last thing we want to do is set Blues head coach Mauricio Pochettino up to fail with the exact same problem.

There’s a nice looking balance to the squad if Cucurella and Chilwell are fighting for the left-back spot. Likewise, Malo Gusto and Reece James are Blues stars at right-back.

This current group is still on the large side and may need trimming in some areas. If there’s to be a significant interest midway through the season in the January transfer window, it should be in the centre-forward position.
