Newcastle United could make an approach to sign one Chelsea defender before the transfer window closes.

Noni Madueke looked to be the Chelsea player whom Newcastle were really interested in. Eddie Howe admires Madueke, but it appears that the Magpies boss also appreciates another footballer in west London.

The Blues are set to have a very busy end to the transfer window. They are about to sign Joao Felix from Atletico Madrid, while there are expected to be several exits.

The futures of Ben Chilwell and Raheem Sterling, for example, are currently up in the air.

Newcastle interested in Chelsea defender Ben Chilwell

New Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has insisted that it is better for Chilwell to find a new club than remain at Stamford Bridge, with the 27-year-old failing to make an appearance against Manchester City over the weekend.

The Italian does not look to have a role for him, preferring Marc Cucurella and Renato Veiga for the left-back position.

In terms of where he could move to, then, the Englishman has been linked to Chelsea’s Premier League rivals Newcastle.

According to CaughtOffside, Newcastle have discussed Chilwell’s name and could make an approach for him before the end of this month.

Ben Chilwell’s contract

With Chilwell not part of Maresca‘s plans, Chelsea will be keen to offload the left-back during this transfer window.

Chilwell is one of the highest earners at the club right now. According to Spotrac, the England international pockets £200,000-a-week.

As per the same source, only Reece James, Raheem Sterling and Romelu Lukaku earn more money than Chilwell.

Lukaku is another player whom Chelsea are desperate to get rid of this summer and the Blues will be hoping that they can get him off their wage bill soon.

Chelsea are willing to slash Lukaku’s price tag, showing just how eager they are to offload the striker. Again, then, there are likely to be sales at Chelsea before August concludes, with Chilwell and Lukaku just a couple of candidates to go.
