Reports have claimed that Croatia defender Josko Gvardiol is set to discuss his future with his agency very soon.

According to GiveMeSport, Chelsea are ahead in the pursuit to sign the defender who is currently enjoying a stunning World Cup.

The 20-year-old has been the star for Croatia as they’ve made a strong run to the semi-finals in Qatar.

His performances have frequently gained praise, and the quarter-final display against heavy favourites Brazil was arguably his most impressive yet.

Gvardiol’s focus will no doubt be on the semi-final later this week, where he will look to inadvertently end Lionel Messi’s fairytale campaign.

However, it won’t take long for the talk to pick up about the future of the RB Leipzig man. Rumours have already begun.

Gvardiol set for talks

It has been claimed Chelsea have tabled their first bid to sign the superstar, aware of competition coming from the Premier League and abroad.

They have reportedly bid more than £80m for his services, as they look to strike before their rivals.

GiveMeSport have claimed that the Blues are ahead of the fellow interested sides in the quest to sign the centre-back, which may stem from their prior intrigue into a signing.

Todd Boehly made a late push to sign the Croatian this summer, despite already adding Kalidou Koulibaly, Wesley Fofana and Marc Cucurella to their ranks.

The deal didn’t end up coming to fruition, despite the big money offer and the ability for the Bundesliga side to receive him on loan for another season.

It is unlikely he will move in January, given how important he is to Leipzig’s hopes both domestically and in Europe.

Chelsea will be hoping their strong relationship with the German side may assist them in negotiations in the future. They are reportedly close to signing Christopher Nkunku from them too.
