Reports suggest Chelsea have now been given the opportunity to sign Memphis Depay from Barcelona this summer.
According to the Daily Mail, Todd Boehly could be working on a deal to bring the Dutchman to Stamford Bridge in a deal where Marcos Alonso and Cesar Azpilicueta would go the other way.
Depay has been linked with a move to the Blues before, with him personally claiming to be interested in joining the club back in 2019.
Instead he chose to join Barcelona two years later, however he has struggled to establish himself as an essential member of Xavi’s attack, with the Catalan club now looking to bring in Robert Lewandowski to bolster striking options.
Despite his average form in La Liga, the Netherlands international has been a key man for country and prior clubs, with former teammate Bruno Guimares describing him as a player who can really scare opposing defenders.
Boehly given chance to sign Depay
The Daily Mail suggests Barcelona’s desire to sign Spanish pair Alonso and Azpilicueta could open up an opportunity for a move, with American Sergino Dest also rumoured to be part of a swap deal.
Dest would provide competition to Reece James at right back, although the Englishman has shown he can also deputise at the centre-back position the Blues are currently lacking in.
Depay, however, would supply the striker the club could be looking for, with Romelu Lukaku’s exit confirmed. Despite having a torrid time in the Premier League at the first time of asking with Manchester United, the 28-year-old has massively developed his game, becoming a consistent scorer for his country on the biggest stage.
It is so far unclear as to whether the negotiations have included discussions about Frenkie de Jong, with the club reportedly looking to hijack a potential Manchester United transfer with the offer of Champions League football hoped to sway interest their way.
