Lille striker Jonathan David is still reportedly a target for Chelsea.

According to the Guardian, David has not dropped off the Premier League club’s radar since being linked earlier in the season.

Jonathan ran out of juice

Rumours of Chelsea’s intrigue towards the young centre-forward began in January, ironically at around the time the goals started drying up.

Before Boxing Day, he had scored 16 times for Lille and was well on track to compete for the Golden Boot.

Turn the clock forward to 2022, and the 22-year-old only added another three domestic goals to his name, taking his total tally up to 19.

He eventually finished joint fifth in Ligue 1’s scoring charts, 13 behind Kylian Mbappe.

But that period between August and December proved David possesses the capability to be a lethal attacking weapon.

His problem is maintaining those levels throughout the course of a campaign where his side needed him most.

Lille most certainly needed him in the Champions League round of 16 doubleheader, rather fittingly against Chelsea.

David has the chance to impress his potential new employers at Stamford Bridge, but failed the audition pretty miserably

Thomas Tuchel’s team tore up their guests within the first hour, then finished them off 2-1 in the second-leg.

“They are the defending champions and quality players; we knew it was going to be a difficult match,” admitted David after the opening encounter in London.

It is therefore slightly surprising that the Lille frontman remains on Chelsea’s watch list.

Although, it is less surprising considering how poorly, as a whole, Tuchel’s forward line performed throughout the term.

Other than Mason Mount and maybe Kai Havertz, none of the offensive players can cover themselves in glory.

Mount finished as Tuchel’s top scorer in the league with 11, followed by Havertz and record-signing Romelu Lukaku on eight.

Christian Pulisic, Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner netted one fewer than Jonathan combined.

The Canadian international won’t realistically get a move to Chelsea unless one of the aforementioned stars sets sail in the summer.

Yet, this scenario is most definitely not out of the question.
