Reports have claimed that Chelsea want to offer a fee more than Enzo Fernandez’s release clause in order to sign him this month.

According to the Evening Standard, the Blues are hopeful that offering a higher sum of money in order to not have to trigger the player’s release clause.

The Blues have held a well-documented interest in signing the 21-year-old this month, after he enjoyed a sensational World Cup campaign.

Fernandez was named young player of the tournament in what could be looked back on as a breakout moment for his future prospects.

Despite Chelsea’s admiration, they have failed to reach the fee that Benfica are looking for, with the Portuguese club requiring his release clause to be triggered in order to part ways.

The Blues have so far been unwilling to do so, with it claimed they would not bid nearly that high to sign him.

Chelsea prepared to do u-turn on Fernandez

However, the Evening Standard have claimed they could be set to go against what they originally wanted and pay potentially even higher than his release clause.

This has been one of their methods in order to complete the signing of Christopher Nkunku. The Blues paid over the odds in order to secure his future for after when this season ends.

The signing of a quality midfielder would be the final touches on a near-perfect rebuild at Stamford Bridge this month.

They have addressed the glaring issues that were present in the frontline, whilst also securing a long-term cover option for Reece James in Malo Gusto from next season.

With the futures of N’golo Kante and Jorginho still unclear, the addition of an option for the future remains imperative to add to the squad as soon as possible.
