Chelsea are reportedly set to make an initial bid for West Ham defender Issa Diop. The France U-21 international has been impressive for The Hammers this season and is now attracting interest from the Blues.

The Daily Express have reported that Lampard could be set to make a move for the defender, who turns 23 today. Despite his current side struggling this season, Diop has continued to put in stellar performances and is now seen as Chelsea’s top defensive target this month.

The club has previously been linked with a move for Bournemouth defender Nathan Ake. Chelsea have a £40 million buy-back option that expires this month but it now appears they are favouring a move for the West Ham man.

The 23-year-old has made 15 Premier League appearances this campaign and has become one of West Ham’s most crucial players. David Moyes is not likely to be keen to see the Frenchman move on this month. He has only overseen three games and will want time to work out his squad.

The club value Diop at £50 million so may reject Chelsea’s first bid once it is made. Lampard will be hoping otherwise. With Marc Guehi reportedly going on loan to Swansea, and Andreas Christensen being the subject of interest from Italy, Chelsea are thin on the ground at the back.

They will need to sign a centre-back this month and Diop could be that man.
